The most important thing to do when reading this article is to keep in mind that this article was written in 1979, which is clearly reflected throughout the piece. The thesis to this article is located in the first paragraph when James Baldwin states, “The argument has nothing to do with language itself but with the role of language.” I think that this statement says a lot about the impact that language had/has on the African American race.

I have to admit, when I first read the the title “If Black English Isn’t a Language, Then Tell Me What Is?”, I was kind of skeptical. But now I agree. I can definitely see how it has had an impact on our culture. This reading made me appreciate Black English a lot more. “IF BLACK ENGLISH ISN'T A LANGUAGE, THEN TELL ME, WHAT IS?” DOUBLE CONSCIOUSNESS. What does Dubois's “veil” represent?

Baldwin discusses how language is a political instrument and a “proof of power” and how it can connect someone or divorce someone from the societal identity. I think that this is a key element in the paper because African American people obviously speak differently from white people. This difference in language creates an even bigger divide, and divorces African Americans even more from the society because it is not the ‘standard’ that the society goes by. Anything that deviates from the standard is seen as wrong, and ungrammatical.

I loved the way that Baldwin says “to open your mouth in England is […] to put your business in the street. You have confessed your parents, your youth, your school, your salary, your self-esteem, and, alas, your future.” By simply speaking a person can tell your background, education, wealth, self worth and your future because that is the amount of power that language holds. It is very easy to make judgements and assumptions about someone by the way they speak.

When Baldwin discusses how white’s romanced the idea of black poverty and often imitated their struggles, this reminded me of the infamous Mammy figure, and black face. White people often portrayed black people in a positive way through the Mammy figure and black face so they would not feel a guilty for enslaving and oppressing them.

I also found it interesting when Baldwin discussed how chattel slavery wouldn’t have existed as long if the slaves all spoke one unified language. This is the main reason that white people didn’t teach black people how to read and write, because they were afraid that if they could all communicate with each other than it would cause a riot, and that the slaves would violently rebel against the white people.

For a while black people were denied education, and if they could get education they would often not take it, which Baldwin briefly discusses in the closing paragraphs. Black people felt like they couldn’t learn anything from white people, so they didn’t want to be educated by them. Because African American people weren’t educated, this put them at even more of a disadvantage in society, and greatly affected their language. Because black people realized they were at a disadvantage by not being educated, they created the first African-American schools.

Baldwin organizedthis text in a way that makes it easier for the audience to understand themessage he is trying to convey. He uses elements of logos and some of pathos toconvince the people who are reading this that his argument is valid. Forexample, he uses logos by explaining how other languages have many dialects. Heuses French as an example by saying how a man in Quebec speaks slightlydifferent than a man from Marseilles. And that they speak crucially differentfrom someone living in Paris. But they still all branch from the Frenchlanguage. By doing this he supports his argument that Black language is adifferent dialect like these examples which is a good argument. Baldwin thenuses pathos by conveying to the audience’s emotion slightly by saying how languageis born by saying that it came from “Black Diaspora”, meaning that slavesdidn’t all speak the same language so they had to come up with their own, whichended up being branched off of English. The Author organized this text bylisting other languages then going into the black’s language and why that wascreated.

Personally, Iappreciate this text because the author explains it to show people that blackEnglish language isn’t a language that is inferior to white English language. Iam biracial, African American and Caucasian. I’ve lived in places that hadprimarily a black English type dialect and in places with a white Englishdialect. In today’s society however it is not really acceptable to speak blackEnglish when in the work force, or you may just not get as far in your careerthan if you spoke with the white dialect. And I feel if more people wouldunderstand that Black English is in fact a language than it would help manypeople.
